Restoration House Gala

It's always funny when threats of bad weather come through Kansas City and people overreact. There was an ice storm that was supposed to hit Friday at noon. In response, schools were closed, the grocery stores were wiped out of bread, milk, and eggs, and it was all anyone could talk about. Even though in the next two days the temperature was going to get up to 16 degrees, one small ice storm was shutting down the city.

Friday came and went and no storm. Then on Saturday the storm was predicted to start at 9pm. Unfortunately this was the same night as the Restoration House Gala, a dinner and fundraiser for a home for victims of sex trafficking in Kansas City. It's a wonderful organization, but the event was very messy. The event was supposed to be 6-10pm, but with the threat of the storm, the event was changed to 6-8pm. People didn't arrive right at 6, and then we had to wait in long lines to register to bid on auction items. We sat at our table (that food was already waiting at) at 6:40pm, and were informed that the auction would close at 7pm!

Nathan guessed that the staff thought that the condensed time would mean that dinner should be served immediately but people were paying to be there and wanted to enjoy themselves, not be rushed.  We were able to register for auction items and we won tickets to the Missouri State Fair and tickets to the rodeo final (at the fair), plus $30 in BBQ gift cards. We've wanted to go to the State Fair for a few years, and this was the perfect opportunity, especially since we got the prize at a steal.
The event closed up early and since there still was no sign of a storm, many people headed to the hotel bar for a drink. We had a babysitter at home so we decided to join our friends.

The storm never came, but everyone was still expecting it, so church was cancelled today. I didn't like to miss church, but it was perfect because one of my favorite thrift stores had a big 50% off sale starting today! Nathan stayed home with Allison and I was able to do some shopping and get myself a Starbucks coffee. I overheard a couple of women at the store chatting about "no-maegeddon" instead of the "snow-mageddon" that was predicted. I laughed out loud at that.
