I've never been someone who liked outdoor work. I prefer to be indoors no matter what. It could be the most amazing day and I'd rather be shaded room with a lamp. Part of living at our place is to keep the lawn and yard attractive because the of the rental unit on the property. I did 2 flower beds last year and filled them with hostas. I could only work close to the porch because Allison wasn't walking and wouldn't let me out of her sight.
The property is really beautiful but needed maintenance. Clearly someone used to put a lot of work into the gardening because there is so much stone (of all sizes and styles), bricks, and plants all over the property. I was cleaning out the back part of the property and kept hitting large landscape rocks that had been discarded. I used them to create flowerbeds and areas under trees.
The guest house had a large day lily that was over taking the steps so I split it, and along with a whole wheel barrel full of the same thing (gifted to me by our neighbor) I lined the house. My neighbor, Lois, said I was welcome to the "ditch lilies", and that "if you ever want to torment an enemy, give them ditch lilies." I was happy to have them because I wanted something that would spread and fill out the area since grass won't grow close to the house and it was getting really muddy.
I used bricks that I found around the yard (and buried in the back of the property) to make the edging. I would have loved to have had more landscape rock but I like using what's already available. Plus, it was simple and can easily be changed later.
Last year I faced the struggle of trying to grow myrtle along a steep section of hill beside our driveway. It never took and by the end of the summer, we decided to sod it. It was a huge difference and it looked amazing. My Dad put it in while he was visiting last year and we still remark about what a huge difference it made.
At the end of the driveway (and just beside where we put the sod down last year) was a strange patch of grass that just didn't look right. It was patchy, it grew big and aggressive weeds, and it wasn't pleasant to have at the end of the driveway.
We decided to sod it. While Nathan went to get the sod (2 trips without my Dad's truck), I pulled all the weeds and mixed up the dirt.
Again, what a HUGE difference. Thankfully, the day after we put the sod in, it started to rain - and rained for a whole week. The grass settled in and now looks perfect.
I trimmed the tree after the week of bad rain, everything was growing out of control!
The next project to tackle was the patch of nothing that was left after a dead tree was cut down last year. We tried grass seed but it never took, plus the air conditioning and pipes next to the house where covered in weeds and again, nothing would grow next to the house. I didn't want to plant anything because my parents always told me to plant away from the house, but I didn't think it made sense to sod so close to the house. Instead, I edged with the natural line of no-growth, then around the air conditioner, and put in some pebbles. Then I used 6 rolls of sod to cover the patches of yard that were spotty.
This is the view the tenants have every time they walk the path to and from their house and I wanted to make sure that it was clean and pleasant.
I've really enjoyed working outside even though Allison only wants to be outside when I'm giving her my undivided attention. We've had some battles, but I was able to work while she napped, so I was able to be productive. I'm thankful for the cool temperatures lately, and now that I'm finished the big jobs, I can go back to pulling weeds and watching my plants grow.
