Our hotel had a breakfast bar so we all headed down the hall at 7am. The room was packed with state troopers and (older) farmer's wives. Apparently the police were using a meeting room and the women were on a trip and "left the husbands at home!" Everyone was smiling at Allison and she loved the attention. She sat quietly in her high chair and ate cheerios and eggs while we enjoyed coffee and waffles.
We were at the zoo when it opened. It was the perfect day to go to the zoo because it was wasn't overly hot or busy. It was $15 a person (same as the KC zoo) and we spent 6 hours walking around. It was laid out really well and the exhibits were very creative but there were also a lot of animals they didn't have (hippos, alligators, kangaroos, elephants, peacocks) and 3 large exhibits were closed. The animals we did see were amazing and we got to see them through glass- the KC zoo is through wire fences and it ruins the pictures, plus the viewing isn't as enjoyable.
After about an hour the bus-trips of kids started to show up. I understand kids are wild but I was shoved, stepped on, had my camera knocked (while taking a picture) more times than I could count. Plus, and I'm not even an "animal-person" but I was really upset watching people bang on the glass of the exhibits. It made me uncomfortable watch it. The gorillas would hide their faces as kids banged on their chests and yelled at the animals, it was unsettling.
Allison had a little meltdown in the morning (she missed her nap) but after a quick snooze on Nathan she was back to being her happy self. Allison had no idea what was going on but she reacted strongly when we were in the aquarium. She loved watching the fish swim over her.
We left the zoo at 3pm, grabbed a burger at a fast food place before we hit the highway and we were back home by 6pm. It feels great to be back home. Even for one day, traveling with a baby is exhausting!
