Nathan has been working crazy hours at work and today was his first day off in a long while. After we slept late (8am!) and had a big breakfast, we headed to the Google Fiber office in Westport. We lived in Westport when we first moved to Kansas City and it's always fun to drive through our old (sketchy) neighborhood and see what's changed.
Google Fiber is spreading through Kansas City and they always seem to be having events or are present at events (they provided hot chocolate at the Tree Lighting Ceremony we went to last week). In the new year they'll be coming to Prairie Village.
In case you don't know about Google Fiber - it's super fast internet. Crazy fast. People who sign up early provide the investment for the company to put lines in to those neighborhoods (I think they need a 30% participation rate). Those that sign up early, get free internet for an extended period of time. Those that sign up once the lines are in, pay a monthly fee like any other internet service.
I follow a website called KC Parent (they have a great free magazine too) that has detailed listings of all the fun kid stuff to do in KC. I saw that there was an open house at the Google Fiber building and you could have your photo taken inside their snow globe. They email the pictures to you, but also give you a hard copy so you can decorate a frame (they had tape, jewels, markers, etc) and hang it on your tree. The snow globe will be moving across the city over the next few weeks, but I wanted to do it early before it got too busy). We arrived right when it opened and were only 5th in line. Allison was really excited (there were props and hats and even fake snow to play with!) and she did a great job with the photographer.
Allison didn't want to leave the globe! After that we ran a quick errand and then took Allison to the park. It's 19 degrees today so Allison was quick to take off her socks and shoes at the playground.
